Austin rapper/hip-hop/R&B artist SHXWNFRESH shares his journey from Baton Rouge to Austin, performing and working with artists around the United States. At the age of 15, he stepped into the world of studios, driven by his friends and a genuine love for the craft. It was a turning point, marking the beginning of a serious commitment to his music. He is inspired by a range of artists, from Anita Baker to Lil Wayne, who helped him turn his emotions and experiences into lyrics.
Speaking to DeShawn Morrison aka SHXWNFRESH, he talks about his upcoming projects, releasing songs, and new collaborations with artists in LA, Houston, and more.

How has your musical journey unfolded, from your early experiences to where you are now? Are there any pivotal moments or challenges that stand out?
“My passion for creative expression began with poetry before delving into full-fledged rap. I established connections with studios which further fueled my musical journey, especially witnessing others taking their craft seriously. I faced hardships in breaking into the media scene, striving to be heard and recognized as an artist. But stuck with my mantra guiding me through these challenges was simple yet powerful: "Be dope."
Can you share a bit about your background and how it has influenced your approach to creating music?
“I am originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My experiences in the city went into my music, and how I navigated through diverse situations, school challenges, and financial struggles. My songs may not always convey a family-oriented theme, as I explore the raw essence of my emotions and experiences. In a track like "IDA'' which blends rap and rock, I express what I feel and where those emotions resonate within me.”
Can you discuss the artists or genres that have had a profound impact on you and continue to inspire your work today?
“I've been deeply influenced by prominent figures such as Lil Wayne, Lil Boosie, Webbie, and Trill Fam, each playing a pivotal role in shaping my perspective and influencing my music. I drew inspiration from their distinctive styles and worked to incorporate elements of their artistry into my writing process. Being in music it's really binary – you're either fully in or you are out, with no middle ground.”
Reflecting on your discography, is there a specific song or project that holds special significance for you?
“I have two tracks that stand out as the foundation of my narrative – "The Come Up" and "Pain Runs Deep." These compositions delve into distinct periods of my life, each contributing to the tapestry of my identity as an artist. "Pain Runs Deep" emerged during a crucial juncture when I found myself grappling with profound emotions. I drew inspiration from my own experiences and those of his friends. I penned the verses on a balcony back home in Baton Rouge, using the pain I was experiencing in my life to navigate and determine whether I was truly ready to commit to rap seriously. Surprisingly, I had not initially envisioned performing these deeply personal tracks, yet I felt a compelling need for people to connect with the raw authenticity of each individual's journey, recognizing the shared struggles and triumphs. On the other hand, "The Come Up" serves as a follow-up, a celebration of resilience and the progress made in the face of adversity. This track marks a cycle of betterment, encapsulating a moment to acknowledge and revel in the positive aspects of the situations they have overcome. Together, these songs form a cohesive narrative that reflects my introspective approach to music and the universal themes that resonate within each listener's journey.”
How do you approach the process of self-discovery and growth as an artist?
“My music delves into a spectrum of emotions – pain, happiness, love, and thrill, with the occasional touch of spirituality. My journey has been a catalyst for personal growth, addressing topics like breaking habits and expressing raw, authentic lyrics. In an era where media noise often overshadows everyday stories, I aim to bring attention to the overlooked aspects of life. I want to serve as a fresh perspective, inviting listeners to engage with narratives that are typically sidelined. It's a straightforward call to lend an ear to the genuine, unfiltered stories that often go unheard amidst the clutter in this day and age.”
Can you share some non-musical influences that have played a role in shaping your creative perspective?
“My journey in the music industry is deeply intertwined with the diverse individuals who shaped my upbringing. From the guidance of an older brother figure, to the impactful presence of the twins, whose influence I have valued and sought advice from, I appreciate and acknowledge the significance of the people who surrounded me during his formative years. Notably, the support extended by various individuals played a pivotal role in my artistic development. Beyond my peers, I draw inspiration from my mother and late grandfather, both of whom have left lasting imprints on my values. In memory of my grandfather, I reflect on the valuable lessons instilled – particularly on how one should treat others with respect and kindness. These personal connections and influences have become integral threads in the fabric of my personal and musical identity, contributing to the authenticity and depth of my lyrics and songs.”
Fun fact time, what's one thing about you that people might be surprised to learn?
“When I’m not busy crafting beats, I love to find joy in the simple pleasures of life. Cheeseburgers are my favorite, and my favorite place is on 6th Street! I am also a proud collector of pops and own 21 Savage and other artist pops.”
Anything you want the readers to know or hear?
“I wanted to leave one last message for aspiring artists: Don't give up on the craft, even though it can be challenging. Perseverance becomes a testament to dedication, proving and showcasing the journey to everyone. Regardless of age, I assure you that there's still a lane for anyone passionate about making music. So, to all dreamers and creators, I encourage you to keep going, stay true to your craft, and remember – “there's a lane for you in the musical industry.”
